    how to stand

    by az450thumper » Thu Jul 01, 2004 5:56 pm

general question for all you guys that ride xcross and that ride in the standing position alot.

I'm not used to this position yet, and only freek when I'm on an incline. I know that I should be up on the front of the bike as much as possible. Should my knees be heavily bent? How do I adjust my throttle so that I don't pull back on it too much while standing and/or in the up position when going through whoops or washes that are constantly dipping?

Any general answers would be appreciated!

    knees vertically above your ankles
    head above your steering head
knees not straight, but only bent slightly
    bent forward in the hips
    ellbows up- and outward

was that what you wanted to hear?

Hey man my advice is to tune out what anyone else says. It takes alot of practice. And to become a great rider you need to learn yourself. :)

az450thumper, Throttle control while standing just takes some practice - before you know it you'll be doing it without thinking about it. Try spending an afternoon riding (on a less technical section) with the goal of not letting your butt touch the seat

As for Hondafans suggestion "to tune out what anyone else says" - I disagree! (No offense meant! - Hondafan...) Try and listen to as many people as possible and use your best judgement to figure out the things that work for you. This forum is a good place to start for information. Remember, everyone will have advice for you but that doesn't mean you have to try it. The biggest thing is to RIDE, RELAX, AND HAVE FUN!

find whats comfortable for you. the best thing to do is ride as much as possible standing up.. you dont need your knees bent until your about to land... try hitting some woops standing up or long roads or something that gives you a chance to do some technical stuff while standing
    good luck

Stand up as much as you can except in really tight turns. This gives you more control over the bike and lets your legs work as your shock absorbers instead of your back and rear-end.

Don't let your head/upper body move (unless it's to avoid a tree branch). Your head and upper body should stay perpendicular to the ground. Lean the bike but not your body.

Counter-balance the bike. If you are going uphill lean forward, if you are going downhill, sit back. This is similar to the above rule about not leaning your body to the side - you're keeping your body perpendicular to the flat ground.

I'm a little late on the topic, but I have a picture of someone climbing a hill while standing, from a 250X write-up. I'm going to try to paste it below, here goes.

    My bad, one more try.
From an online write-up of the 250X:

    Image

Pretty steep hill, but body remains perpendicular to ground.
