Your going the opposite way. You want to press down and to one side on the bars, there are a bunch of how to guides you may want to lookup in Google. Pulling back is for backflips.

Its hard to explain, but heres what i can tell you. Ok first, you need a 30-40ft double that is pretty big (it is very intimidating-the whole thing) Make sure you are very used to your bike. Ok, say you are going to whip the bikes back end to the right. Stay to the right side of the track. Go up the face of the jump angling left when you go off the face, slide your butt to the very left edge of your seat. Muscle the bars down and to the left. Then lighten the right peg and push out your left peg. it should "whip". Then muscle your bars back to right and push your right foot hard against the right side of the bike. It takes a lot of practice, I am just starting to learn, but i almost have it. Good luck.

(P.S.- If the bike doesn't come back from the whip, expect to get new rims, handlebars, a few other parts, and you most likely WILL break a bone or bones)

Good info I myself am also trying to figure out how to whip or better yet control side to side movment of my bike in the air. I also am lucky enough to live near the oregon coast so I often ride the dunes and eat it often. no broken bones or parts yet. so if possible practice on the sand. but yet again I am unsure if whipping a bike on the sand is performed the same way

Uggghhh...

The rule is: If you have to ask, then you're not ready.

But I will give you a tip. The whip technique begins before you even hit the face of the jump.

+1, you should really just mess around enough on the track so you get to the point you can whip on anything, not just 30-40 foot jumps. No video I ever watched was as good at teaching me as just going out and riding was, even accidentally whipping taught me pretty well.
