    Considering a 250X too..

    by Addicted » Thu Feb 28, 2008 8:56 am

In December I bought a carry over 2006 CRF 450X. I came back to Honda four strokes after being on a KTM 200 EXC for the last three years. I use the 450X at my parent's house were it fits the type of riding I do there like a glove. After riding it I just don't seem as content with my 200.

I still have the KTM for tight woods riding but I'm thinking of selling it to purchase a CRF 250X.I like the fact that my KTM is lighter and turns very well, but it's still a KTM and the suspension isn't very impressive.
For the folks that have rode both do you think a 250X with CCC mods will pull my ~230 lbs butt through the woods? Will I be hapy with it after my 200? I've also considered a Thumper Racing bigbore kit in the near future if I purchased a 250X.

So do you still have the 450x? I would run that if you still have it. With your weight you will kill that little 250x motor.

Yeah I have it. I was just looking for a lighter bike.

The 250x will pull you around and up the hills just fine, but you will be working the crap out of it! Have you ever ridden a 250x? If not I would ride one first they are gutless compared to your 450.

No I haven't. Thanks for the great input, the problem is I don't know of anyone that has one I could try.

I weigh 220 with gear and my 2006 250x pulls me just fine. I've had it almost 2 years, maybe 120 hours+/- all trail, lots of fluid changes, and valves still in spec. I've done the basic mods.

I'm far from a pro, but I've been able to pull myself up the hills at Little Stony. Sometimes it would take a couple tries, but it wasn't the lack of power!

But no question, I'd by a 450x tomorrow if I didn't have so much into this one!

How would you describe the areas in which you ride?

A lot of tight single track, some very steep climbs with loose rock, very little wide open stuff.
Most of my riding is Georgetown, Elkins Flat, tight woods trails. I haven't ridden anywhere besides NorCal, but Stonyford has some of the steepest hills I have ever seen!

What about getting a crf 250r? Would that handle a 230lb rider better?

Yeah I like that idea too, I could put a stroker crank and athena kit in it and have 300+ CC's. The thing attracting me to a 250X is the fact that the 06's can be had for a reasonable price brand new so you know what you get, and the E-start after making fun of it for years it's very nice when you stall it in a place that it would be hard to kick start.

If my KTM sold today or tomorrow, I'd consider a 250X the next day assuming the ones I'm looking at aren't sold out..

I do two extremes of riding, first with my 450X I ride open stuff and it works great for that.. It even works great for getting cattle in to work - who needs a stinking horse! While I'm around where I work I ride some tight trials that they joke about being 1000 turns per mile.. It's not really a joke because it seems like there are that many turns at times. this is when I think a 250R or 250X would be fun.

No. The stock crf250r is setup all wrong for woods riding. The suspension is too stiff ect. and it will beat the crap outa ya if you ride it allday.

Those carry over 2006 CRF 250X's are selling like hot cakes. The two from the dealer I planned to buy one from if my bike sold are already gone. I might know of one more.. Another dealer I know has sold 50 of them since Jan. 1, 2008!
