    Video Camera Adapters...

    by nedirtbikr » Mon Jan 15, 2007 12:08 pm

Not sure if this is a "General Discussion" or "Off Topic" thing, so I'm going to post in both.

I have a Sony DCR PC-1000 video camera that I plan on using with my new Twenty20 helmet camera. I have a question for those that might be familiar with the Sony camera.

On the Sony camera, the A/V-in connection is a half circle female connector. The stock A/V cable that plugs in is, of course, male half-circle and then breaks out into the three RCA style male plugs. The plug side (on the camera) of the A/V cable sticks out about 1 - 1 1/2 inches and I'm afraid it is ripe for the breaking if I go down just the right way.

I'm looking for an adapter that will either:

    1. Take that 1/2 circle end and make it a 90-degree shape so that it doesn't stick straight out of the camera (hugs the camera helping to protect from getting broken off)...AND...converts the RCA ends into a standard 1/8" A/V female connector.

    OR

    2. The same thing as above, but would be fine with the 1/8" connection being a female 1/2 circle connection.

The main point is I'm trying to find an adpater that would give me a 90-degree turn so that the A/V connection is not sticking straight out the side of the camera 1 - 1 1/2"

I have an adapter that will take the RCA connections of the Sony and convert them to the 1/8" connection of the helmet cam.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks all!

Yep, that looks like the one. It's not the end of the world if I can't find one, it's just that I'd like to protect that connection as much as possible. The LANC controller I have (Cameye Sport) is a 90-degree connector and fits PERFECT...hugs the body of the camera really well. I know several people who use this camera in the skydiving community, but they don't use a bullet camera so they weren't much help.

I've contacted Sony, Radio Shack, Best Buy, some local camera/video specialty stores, and looked through several online "connector" factories. It's looking like an adapter just doesn't exist. And, if that's the case....so be it. The bag I have it in is very padded and very compact so the connection will probably be just fine. I just wanted to do everything I could.

    Any ideas Ken?

    Thanks.

Thanks, Ken. I sent that company an email asking about pricing and some architecture details on the cable. Assuming it's what I think it is, I believe it's perfect.

If you get these anytime soon, please let me know. I'd rather buy from you if possible.

    Thanks again!

Ken - I got a hold of them. Couldn't wait any longer for email so I called them (I'm an impatient dude.)

They hand make those cables and can put any kind of termination on the cable you need. They just sent a cable that has the Sony connection, with a 90-degree turn, with a 3.5mm female connection to interface to the Twenty20 camera with no further adapters. The whole cable is about six to eight inches long. They want $45 for adapter (which seems a little high,) but I guess that's not too bad since it can't be found anywhere else (unless a guy knows someone in the A/V cable/adapter making business.) $45 isn't that bad also when you consider the damage that can be done to the camera with the standard plug in the case of going down just right and banging the hell out of the connection.

I dropped your name and email several times. You might be hearing from them.

I haven't really gotten a chance to use it riding, but I did do a little testing just walking around the house and stuff. It seems to be pretty good, but this is the only bullet style camera I've had any remote experience with. The thing I like the most, so far, is the camera is powered by one 9-volt battery and lasts an estimated 12 - 16 hours. All the other cameras I've seen have used a large pack of six to eight AA batteries.

I bought mine from Ken right here at CRFsOnly. Here's the link:

they finally got back with me too and same thing...$45 for that little connector. that's seems very pricey even for a custom cable. i'll keep looking to see if there are others available. i doubt i'll stock this unless i get more inquiries.

i'll order one ken. i need a new rear tugger anyways (broke the metal washer/spacer on mine). maybe you could talk to twenty20 about making one. since they make their cables, they might would be able to make them.
