    Another 50 question

by Muffler Bearing » Thu Nov 13, 2008 7:34 pm

Hey guys, my boy weighs 62lbs and has an 05' CRF50F. He is getting a little tall for it but not enough to jump to a 100. For Christmas the wife and I want to do a few things to it to keep his interest. I want to replace the plastics, stiffen up or make the suspension better, replace the bars, raise the seat and make it a little faster.

    So here are my questions:

    1. I found some carbon fiber and black replacement plastics for his bike on ebay. Prices were like $45 and $35. Price is good to me but are they worth it? Sticker kits are more expensive.

    2. It is hard for me to spend $250 on a set of bars and cables. What kind of options do I have? I guess I am asking what brands do I stay away from? BBR has some nice stuff as do others but prices aren't making this easy.

    3. Reading the forums I find that the stock front forks don't have fluid in them, just grease and springs. What can I do with them? How about the back?

    4. I was looking at the 88cc kit but came across the 82cc kit. What are the pros and cons of each? Do I have to run an oil cooler with both? What about the carb? I read earlier that the 82cc kit works well with the 18mm carb but it is an extra $170. Is there any difference in the supposed ebay 18mm carb (kien?) that costs $45 and is new?

    Ran out of room....

Is the 82cc worth it? Has anyone done it at their house? The plan is for he and I to build this thing together.

What else would I need engine wise if I bought the kit and a carb? Would the stock exhaust work for a while? How about the stock filter and ignition?

Ah, okay, I will stop now. Hopefully someone has some good pointers for me. thanks for reading.

I have a friend that has done exactly what you are talking about and the thing runs very strong for a little bike. To do it right you'll have to spend the money.

If you're gonna spend that kind of money why don't you just upgrade his bike to a used 70 or 80? You can probably find a used 70cc for under $1k and maybe a used 80cc for around $1k. You were gonna turn his 50 into an 82cc anyway, might as well see the 05 for $500 and spend the money you would have to on an upgrade and just buy a larger bike. JMO.
