    Durham Plantation (Georgia)

    by KevinM » Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:14 am

My familiy and I are heading south on April 7th to Durham Plantation in Union Point, GA. I found the place on the web while looking for riding spots on the east coast.

There's a lot of info on their web site.

    http://www.durhamtown.com/

Seems like a decent place. They have one Adult MX track and one kid's track. Plus a third track that is mentioned but not described much.

There are also about 40 miles of trails according to the site.

You can rent an ATV.. and yes.. a CRF-250X. Plus smaller bikes. 50, 70.. etc

There's also three lakes for fishing. You can Trap/Skeet shoot if you're into that. Or hunt if it's the season and that's what you do.

There are some MX parks and off-road parks not too far from there. We may check one out if we have time.

They have a bunch of RV hooks-ups (60 I think) and a dozen or two lodges to rent. Plus campsites.

So.. we're keeping our expectations modest and we'll see how it goes. I'll report here after we return. If anyone's been there and can provide some insight, that would be apreciated.

Durham town is DUSTY, so prepare yourself for that. The offering of trails is very nice, the single track can get very tight but is fun to ride and doesnt ever get really difficult. THe place is overrun with quads, plenty of trials for those too if you got em. The kiddie track was fun to watch, in the best shape, and all around a good track for the young bucks. The adult MX track is fun, good table tops, a few small doubles that are all easy. I had to lay off a few of the jumps due to it being my first time on a mx track, but its a fun track. It is hard pack with a lot of dust so you can wash out in the corners pretty easy. The unnamed track you mentioned is unnamed for a reason, its worthless, a couple trips around will teach you that........there is also a hill climb that didnt prove to be too exciting after a couple trips up we moved on. All in all, its a fun place to spend a weekend. IF you are down in that area and want to check out some other places, look up Mill Creek track, Im not sure where its located, somewhere on the outskirts of atlanta, but its alot of fun, deep, loamy track, lots of evevation changes, some good jumps, and an all around great track to ride. Hope this helps you out some, have a great time.

haven't been there in a while
when I was the clerks were unfriendly, the trails barely marked, no map available
I am not used to pay $25 to get bitched at

the Ridge, north of Birmingham, AL, is not as crowded, friendly folks, tough trails ...

have not been to Highland park yet, it is closer, but all backroads for me

Forgot to follow up after got back.

I had a good time. It had rained for two days before we arrived, so day 1 wasn't too dusty. I road on what I think was MX-1.. Near a fishing pond. Closest to lodge. It was OK. 4 or 5 table tops... two were pretty big... a very small double...

Rode another in the middle of the woods. MX-3 I think. It's on the side of a hill, small step-ups and step downs. Was also OK to ride on.

The kids tracks are pretty good. The one they run their MX series is not too difficult but still fun for the fast kids. That track got some water so dust wasn't an issue. The other two track weren't watered when I was there so it was pretty dusty.

I didn't make it to the other tracks. Next time.

Trails were extensive. Lots of fire roads you could fly on... I mean 5th gear..wide open in some sections. They put some small jumps in a number of trails which made it fun.

The harescramble trails were challenging. I road on what I think was an intermediate trail.. it was rocky, muddy and hilly. Kept me busy. I managed to get a little lost at one point but the map they provided helped me out. I had to stop my engine and listen.. it was dead quiet...that's when i checked my fuel. 10 mins later I was back in civiliztion.

I did't ride the handlebar width trails, but I saw them. They change them up often, so they're probably fun to ride.

RVing there was fine. There were a TON of ATVs, but other than MX-3, I really didn't encounter too many as I rode.

The office staff was nice enough.. but they all smoke like chimneys. If you don't smoke, standing in the office it rough. We bought some shirts and they smelled like cigarette smoke until we washed em... yikes. I may suggest they adopt a "smoke em outside" policy for their staff.

They have a dining hall.. but the we didn't dig the food. Too salty. No idea why they make it like that. Pizza was ok though.

There were a TON of bikes and ATVs to rent. Even a 450X and YZ450F. The idea being... you could try it out without buying one. It wasnt't cheap. I think $125 for 2 hrs.

Even though it was daylight until 7pm or so... they closed all tracks and trails at 5pm. That bummed me out. I could the the trails closing.. but I wanted to ride later.

So, it was a good trip.. Dusty for sure, esp behind ATVs.. (have I mentioned I detest ATVS?)

Trails were by far the best part. Expecially coming from NJ where there are really NO trails for off-road bikes. MX Tracks that i rode were OK. But I think I may have not ridden on their best track, which has a water system.
