Harescramble racers, what would you do?

A typical HS is 2 hrs.
If you were 1 hr into it, and in 2nd place and about 3 bikelengths behind 1st, and not having to work too hard to keep up. Would you wick it up and take the lead and try to check out? Or pace him out till the end gets closer, then make the move?

My race pace rarely depends on how I'm doing. If I'm lucky and my pace is faster than everyone else, I win, if not, so be it. If your not working hard to keep up, why haven't you passed him?? Don't give someone behind you the chance to catch up.

pace it out then take him near the end

I would challenge him and see if hes really pushing it or not. He could be thinking " I'm in first i don't have to push any harder" and then when you think you got him you don't.

I always pass if I can.
You may think you're not having trouble keeping up , and he may just be cruising.
The later in the race the more tired we all get, and it takes more energy to pass than to protect a position.
It's a Hare Scramnle, and in lots of Hare Scrambles places to pass are sometimes tough to find. Doug

All really good feedback. Thanks.
In this particular case last weekend, I opted to pass and push hard early. (1/2 way into it)
It paid off cause I won but 2nd place lap times was faster than mine on the last 3 laps. (8 lap race)
Fortunately I made enough distance at mid point to cover it.
In the end I won by 25 seconds. But had there been another lap, 2nd would have passed me and I would not have had anything for him.

Good job! What bike are you racing on?

Thanks. I'm on a 450X
I have another one this weekend.
I'm gonna try to check out again at about the half way point. Its not my typical approach, but if it works again, I'll have a new program.

Well since your game plan is to just check out, be sure to let us know when ,what class it is you're going to dominate, and where the event will be held, so we can read about a Honda with a guy named Bob I presume riding it finish first. Doug

If I was trailing 1st with little effort, I would pass, take the win and then the next race if I had the same results I'd consider riding in another class. Congradulations on your win!!
Make sure you don't abuse your ability to win a class and move up to a new challenge at the proper time.

Ding-ding -ding !
There you go !
Great points. Anyone who can realistically plan on something as far as results go as just being able to execute a 'checking out' plan really needs to be moving up a class, because that's known as "cherry picking"and is unsporting.
So for now, do let us know where we can read about the results so we can see that Honda up there. Doug

Is a win by 25 seconds in a 2 hr race with riders behind me doing faster lap times and catching up concidered Cherry picking??? There are 7200 seconds in 2 hrs! 25 seconds isn't much.
Plus it was the first race of the season, and it was exactly the type of terrain I practice on. It was my day.
Believe me, I am not the type to linger around in a lower class just to domonate.
And BTW... the term "TRY to Checking Out" is my way of trying to be confident. Key word there is TRY. I can't plan it and execute it hand down guaranteed. But I can damn sure try.
