    Tether switch on EFI CRF450

    by Johnbeton » Mon Mar 15, 2021 8:58 am

I want to install a tether style kill switch on a 2016 crf450r (for use in a quad).
The wiring diagram shows the red/yellow and black/white wire are used for the stop switch. I messured the continuity and it seems to be normal open.

Is it correct that I can connect the tether switch to red/yellow and black/white ? They both run to the ECM, none of them seems to be grounded directly. So I just want to be sure.

I am looking at the diagrams of the 18 , and the 9-11 and 16 , since they are all EFI , what I am seeing is the Black/White seems to go to the ECM that reads Engine Stop Switch , what I would do is test each side of the switch , as the 18 , looks to go directly to ground , but the 09-11 and 16 seems to have the Red/Yellow wire go to a connector that says VCC , not sure what that is , so if you put the Ohm meter on the B/W wire and push the kill button , then put it on the R/Y and push the button , it will either go to negative , or just break the circuit/make the connection open , the R/Y also seems to go to the TP Sensor and the MAP Sensor , and it looks like the MAP Switch ... to me it seems to be a power wire

I really am not sure what would be the best option , but I would think if it went between the R/Y somewhere after the kill button , it would kill the system ... what you might also try is put your meter to Volts , and check the B/W and R/Y when the bike is running to see if it is voltage , then unplug the R/Y and see if the bike dies , it may just be a break in the circuit when the button is pushed , as it could go either way

Question , you said the Tether is supposed to be for a ATV , have you looked at the ATV Manual/Wiring Diagram to see what , if any differences there is between it and the bike ??

I measured the resistance between the red/yellow and black/white wire. When you push the button the circuit is closed, when not pushed it is open.
The ATV tether switch is normal open, so therefor I assume it will act the same as the original button. But indeed the VCC is voltage, that what confuses me

Yea , that is the part that I am unsure of as well , what you can try is to disconnect the B/W wire out of the switch and see if the bike starts , if it does you can always kill it by putting it in gear and holding the brake and releasing the clutch , but then check for voltage on each wire while the bike is running , that way you can tell if they are both power or just 1... then do the same with the R/Y , this might tell you if it is a interrupt switch or a grounding switch

I am guessing you are using the bike for Hill Climbs or Flat Track or something of that nature that requires the tether ??

Another option may be to get a tether that gives power when it is connected and breaks the circuit when it is pulled (I believe they have a brass clip instead of plastic) , and hook it to the coil wire , it will stop the power to the coil , which will kill it then and leave your kill switch unaffected ...

Don't we all wish to have a simple bike with magneto ignition.
You grounded the plug and it didn't run.

Vcc is normally the voltage on the collector of a transistor.
Wonder if that is the reference in this case.

Sorry for the late reply guys, I tested it connecting the tether kill switch to black/white and red/yellow.
I can confirm this works perfectly like it should.
I can now user both the original stop button and have the function tether kill switch
