    Broken decomp plunger 2007 CRF450R :-(

    by ben c » Tue Feb 07, 2017 12:46 am

    Hi guys,
Broke my bike at the weekend :-(
It's super hard/impossible to kick over, checked the timing and that was fine, and after doing some reading on here I learnt about the decomp system.
Took the cam cover off and found part of the decomp plunger broken off in the top of the head.
I can't seem to find much info on the '07 decomp setup.
Can I buy this plunger separately? And can I fit it with the cam in situ or do I need to strip the cam out?
    Thanks,
    Ben.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Yes you can buy the part separately (link below ,part #29)

You need to remove the Decompressor shaft (sprocket side) to remove/replace the plunger , so yes , you need to remove the cam from the engine , but you should be able to leave it in the cam tower

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the advice Jim.

There's a mass of info on here that is really helpful/interesting.

I will take the cam shaft out tonight and remove the decompressor shaft to make sure that no other damage has occurred and then try and find a supplier here in the UK.

When you say "you need to remove the cam from the engine , but you should be able to leave it in the cam tower" ...... do you mean I should remove the head?

No , you just remove the Timing Gear (make sure the engine is at TDC and remove the Chain Tensioner first) and then remove the 4 bolts holding the cam tower to the head , and the cam comes out with it

Do you have a Owners Manual ?? , it should have the procedure in it

    Hi Jim,

Found the manual on the Honda site and followed it from there.

I've got it all apart now and looks like the only damage is to the decomp plunger, which is good news.

Checked my valve clearance whilst I was there and all fine apart from one, so will sort that at the same time.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Just an update.

    All fixed and starting great.

Went out for the first time properly with dirt wheels at the weekend and was great fun.

    Thanks for your help Jim.
