    Will 2003 CRF450R forks fit on my 2004 CRF250R?

    by HONDACRF250R » Sat Jul 02, 2016 5:44 am

I need a set of forks on my 04 crf250r, my left one has a big dent in it and it pisses oil like crazy. My other one just started leaking oil last weekend, and I have decided that just a pair of seals won't do the job. So I have found a pair of 03 crf450r forks and I am trying to find measurements for them to see if they will fit my 250. The part number for the wheel bearings are the same and the triple clamp bearings are the same too, now I don't know if the axel is the same for its length? I also don't know if the fork holes in the triple clamps are the same either. I do know that the forks are made by Showa so they should be similar and that the 450 forks have a stiffer spring in them then the 250. If anyone has a crf450r 03-04 could you please measure the diameter of your forks right under each triple clamp and the length of your axel, anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

They should fit no problem , the only issue may be the brake caliper mount , and i don't believe it is different , other than that it should be a direct fit ....you may have to swap springs depending on your weight , 450 springs are for guys around 160-185 lbs , 250's are for guys around 140-160 lbs

Thanks for the info, I should be going to pick up the forks tomorrow, could you send me the diameter of your forks right under the triple clamps.
    Thanks

All CRF250/450R/X forks are 47mm , they all interchange from 02-08 (triple clamps are the same with the exception of number plate mounting holes , the number plate for the year clamps have to be used and clamp offset is different for 08 only, the only other difference is as i mentioned with the brake caliper mount , and some are a few mm longer/shorter than others , but not a significant amount to affect handling , the fork lugs( where the axles mount) is a few mm back or forward from each other thru the 02-08 years , other than that , they will all swap back and forth for ALL 250/450's , but as stated the spring rates will be different , the standard spring rate for the 450R/X is 0.46-0.47 , the 250's are usually all 0.44

Also (not that it matters in this case , but , the 02 internals are smaller (valving) , the 02 uses 10mm shims , the 03-04 use 20mm and the 05-08 use 30mm , the rebound rods are all the same , valving is softer on the X models , and stiffer on the R models

So at the worst you might have to use the 450 caliper mount and/or the springs would need swapping

The 08 would have 22mm clamp offset where all other years/models (from 02-08 ) have 24mm offset clamps (if you were to swap clamps)

But they will bolt right up to your clamps , that part is not a issue

I appreciate the information Jim. The forks I am getting have the bottom triple clamp and the 450 brake caliper all together, so if I have to change the caliper, I will have one.
If this deal doesn't work out I have another guy lined up with a brand new set of Showa forks for my bike and he only wants $300.
The first guy only wants $150, so I will see tomorrow but either way it is still a deal, new forks are over $2000 new.

Well I am going to be replacing the seals on the new forks I am getting so I can swap out the springs then, so it should work out nicely. I am crossing my fingers that the deal doesn't fall through.
