    2012 450 service

    by Troyle89 » Sat Sep 05, 2015 10:21 pm

Hey guys, just got my hands on my first honda. Nice 2012 crf450r, doing all the standard service routine. But for the life of me I can't remember what engine and gear box oil levels I have to fill back into it. I've already changed the filters ect. Thanks for any help guys.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

I don't have a Honda Service Manual for a 2012 , but i have one for 09-11 , and it should be the same or close to the 12

Engine: (with filter change) 0.62 liter (0.66 U.S. qt, 0.55 Imp qt)

    Trans: 0.59 liter (0.62 U.S. qt, 0.52 Imp qt)

    That should be fairly close

I'm not familiar with the 450R, but if you have an oil check hole on the right side (just below and to the left of the water pump), then you'll want to verify the tranny oil level using that hole with the bike on a level surface, not on a stand . You want oil to be to just drizzling out of the hole. If no oil comes out, add until it does then plug it back up. I typically fill the tranny about 100cc less than the manual says, then add additional oil until it runs out of the hole, let the bike idle for three minutes, sit for three minutes, then check again and add if necessary.

I actually do like i do with my 450X for my 450R , i use a full quart in the tranny side and don't worry about it , the engine side i use the recommended amount , either way will be fine

I suppose overfilling the tranny won't hurt anything. It's also a PITA to hold the bike upright while pouring oil through the tiny fill hole, so I'm all for measuring slightly over what the manual calls for and just filling it up without using the check hole. I use Honda HP4, which isn't cheap, so I think I'll add 0.75 qt from now on.

Yea its not going to hurt anything to run a full quart , the area the gears are in is fairly tight , so when the gears spin it evacuates the oil a bit and adding the extra just ensures it won't sling all the oil off the gears and bearings , its a common issue with the 450X and running high speeds in the desert or running on the street where your winging the engine for extended periods in 4th or 5th gear , it will throw all the oil off the gears and bearings and sometimes cause tranny seizures , so the "trick" was to add a full quart and the gears are always in oil , and the overfilling does not harm anything , so a lot of people just do the same for the R (I'm one of them) , been doing it since i got my R in 08 with no ill effects , and have been doing it since 06 in my X

Engine side , do the normal amount...
