Hi, I'm new here. I have a 2004 crf 450R and just replaced the countershaft seal in it. I pulled the old one out; it took awhile and came out in bits. It was the original, i'm guessing.

I cleaned it out real well, using various picks and a razor blade to remove any tiny bits left.
I greased the new one up and installed it and took it for a ride.

I noticed a little oil around the sprocket/on the frame after I was done. Is it normal to leak a little after initial install, or is something else up?

I hope it's nothing, but I wanted to ask.

There are actually 2 seals oil seal part 33 and D-ring seal part 32. Did you replace both?

I only replaced the one seal. However, I picked up the other one on the way home from work, and I'll install it this evening.

My concern is that I didn't damage anything in the seal mounting area. I used a couple small picks and a razor to clean the old one out, since it came out in little pieces. I never used a hammer or anything like that. Just firm pressure on the picks and blade. I swapped out the fluids and when I was done, just to make sure the tranny oil had nothing foreign in it.

Hey, just wanted to drop a quick thanks to everyone for their help. I replaced that "d-ring" seal inside the countershaft collar, and it worked great!
I didn't notice any fluid around the countershaft!
One other thing i noticed, there was some "rub" marks around the area where the countershaft seal went. I'm guessing this is from an aftermarket sprocket that was on it at one point? I applied a little JB weld to the area and tapered it to match the factory case lines.

Hey, no problem, and welcome to Crf's Only. That rub mark was probably from an O-ring chain. They are wider and without the correct spacer will rub on the case.

I pulled the metal collar off, then the little d-ring/o-ring thing that affixed to the shaft inside. The bigger black seal I'm referencing is being very difficult....I'm hope this thing comes out because I just took a couple chunks off it trying to get it out...and it's not budging...please tell me I didn't just do something stupid, by jacking this thing up....

Nope. It's just being a bugger. Keep working. Just don't damage the surface of the case it seals against!!

I spent probably about 45 minutes, no lie getting mine out. It definitely came out in bits. The best tip I can give is to take a sharp razor blade with a nice, small pointed tip and gently but firmly work it around the seal groove. I had a soft bristle brush and cleaning solvent that I frequently brushed into the seal area to flush away any loose tiny chunks.

That's why I changed my transmission oil when I was done.

It's a PITA, and I too thought that I might have messed it up, but as long as you're careful not to use too much force, it'll be fine. I used a large diameter socket and plastic mallet and tapped the new (well lubed)seal squarely into the seal mounting groove. Haven't had a drop since.

He was looking at this post. I too need to replace my seal and dring seal I have a 2004 CRF 250X by the way.....

Anybody know where I can buy them that wont cost me almost $18.00 to ship ( seriously for 2 small parts that fit in an envelope and cost $6.95!)
