A little more info please - Is the bike new or used? Did you purchase the bike from a dealer? What year model is it? How much run time is on the bike? Do you have experience starting a 4 stroke? When the bike is running - how does it run? Is it easier to start after it's warmed up? It might be a little easier for someone to give you an answer with this information. Feel free to add any info I may have missed...

My 2003 CRF150 is a little difficult to start when cold. My 2002 XR100 (which has less hours on it) starts first kick every time.

I have been told two things. First give it time to get break-in hours. So if your's is new, give it time. Second, I was told if after break-in it still is hard starting, it needs rejetted, the pilot jet if I remember correctly. I haven't gotten around to checking up on changing the pilot jet yet. I guess it's not bad enough for me to be overly concerned.

    Trouble Starting?

by Lisa Lynn » Sat May 22, 2004 11:23 pm

I've had my problems starting my CRF 150 also. But no worries, I think it is common on many. Took out my spark arrester and it helped a little bit. (Was a pain, had to heat it up to get it out, but quite worth the minor work) Like the last guy said, give it some break in time. Mine is only a year old and it gets easier as time goes by (or maybe my leg is just getting stronger). And of course, as I am sure you know, it's a lot easier to start these stubborn ones in warmer weather. G'Luck! :D

they are set up real lean,if you lower the clip on the needle one or two positions it will start much easier also it comes with a 38 slow jet you can go to a 40 and i have ran up to a 105 or 110 on the main runs better

Allow your bike to get broke in and then adjust your idle speed. Dont forget to keep your filter clean.
Thats the same problem i had!.

I've got an 04, first thing i did was to remove the baffel from the exhaust. Then I removed the silencer under the seat. Went to a 115 main jet, one size larger needle jet, and a 42 pilot jet. Starts first kick, and now this thing screams!!! Just so you know, this is set up for elevations under 2000ft. :D :D :D

My CRF150 starts first kick just about every time :D
EXCEPT when I lay it down (mostly on the right side) and then it's a little devil to start  I now just open the throttle and 1/2 kick lightly, knowing it won't start right away so not to get in a snit.

When I first got it it was really tough to start but it was my first bike as well. I finally ignored my hubby and opened the throttle abit and that, along with practicing the kick every night and wearing it in, seemed to help. We also checked the sparkplug and valve clearances and regaped.

Seriously easy to start this bike when it's tuned in. I can start it with flip-flops, I can start it with my hand, I can start it when I flip the starter out and coast down the hill (after stalling- it's easier to start this way than bump starting even). It's all in the tuning I believe.

I have 2 friends that had hideous problems but my secret theory is that their hubbies just never set the bike up right as they started tearing it apart the second it got home.

I've just re-jetted and was REALLY worried that might make it start worse but the only difference is that I now don't need to open the throttle when starting.

four strokes are a bugger to hot start. If you lay it down it will test your patience to start it again.

its called the cork. and to remove it simply:

    1. remove the seat
    2. on top of the black box (airbox) there is a place to fit your fingers into and simply pull it out. i never did mine that way though.

Just like hondafan wrote, small rectangular piece under the seat with two small holes. Put two fingers in and pull it out. Be sure to re-jet after this!!! These bikes are lean to begin with, and this will make them leaner. :D

Here's a link for you from the TumperTalk Forum.
If you've already taken the snorkel (cork, whatever) out you won't need to do the first few steps and can just atart on Step #5.

The CRF150 is pretty easy to rejet.
