    Power Up Needle

    by rwensmann » Wed Jun 24, 2015 11:04 pm

Quick question, does the stock needle have 5 positions for a clip? I had a 2007 150F that had been barely used for 5 years and my 13 year old son started riding it so I bought a pipe PC T4 and the power up jet kit from CRF and pulled the carb and I already had a 115/42 and the clip was 4th position from top counting down towards the needle end. I had already pulled the air box piece out and put a UNI on years ago modded the stock pipe and shimmed the front forks. Trying to help the bike out a bit more I put the BBR spring front/rear as well as the BBR rev box. If that is the power up needle I too have that slight bog and I am not sure if I have the clip in the right position?

The PowerUp needle included in the CRF's Only kit should be installed in the middle clip position. Do not reuse the stock needle. Remember, you need to adjust your fuel screw as well. Also, replace those jets with the new jets included in your kit. This will insure you're not having issues due to a partially obstructed jet.

Does that stock needle have the clip and 5 positions? The needle I have in there and the one I just got look identical to my eyes. I think I put the power up needle in years ago and just forgot (I'm original owner). When I pulled that bike back out to use several months ago I pulled the jets cleaned them really well and the bike has been running great. I did these mods to try to give him a little more power and a little more suspension. So if the needle I have is the correct one I will leave the bike alone but will move it to position 3. I am still unclear do you count from top (blunt) to bottom (sharp tip) and as you move the clip down is that more fuel because it can be lifted higher by the throttle? Also in your kit there was a brass almost sleeve like part, what was that for? I put the new pipe on and it had more bog I adjusted the fuel and it got better but I will move that clip to the middle and try it again.

It's nearly impossible to clean the pilot jet without the correct method/tools. I always recommend replacing the pilot jet if it was once clogged or partially clogged. The power up needles are engraved so if you have one already installed it should have the same engraving for identification. Clip position count is always from the top of the needle (blunt end).

So position 3 middle is easy enough because that is the one spot counting from top or bottom is the same. I was just trying to understand when moving up and down what it will do. I will pull the carb out again tonight and take a look to see if its the same, this time I will ask my son (with good eyes) if they are the same. I cleaned the jets really good with tools I bought on-line years ago. What was that sleeve for?

All 5 bikes sat for nearly 5 years until the riding bug hit my youngest two 4 months ago and it has been every weekend all day for months, game on and me non-stop working on bikes. My 13 year old has been riding my 250x a little as well so when I jump on the 150f with my younger two while he is on my bike its nice to now have a bike with a little suspension back and something he likes. He is talking 125 two stroke and I really don't want that with all the trail riding we have been doing. When he wants power and hill climb junk he grabs mine but loves the intermediate track with that 150f. I was slightly thinking about that EO 225 kit, those guys are 10 minutes from my office.

The purpose of the needle is to meter fuel from the main just. The taper of the needle and the position of the needle in the main jet determines the amount of fuel being metered through the main jet. When you twist the throttle the needle raises and more fuel is metered. So, the clip position determines where along the taper the needle starts from when twisting the throttle. In general the higher the needle in the slide (lower clip position) the richer the mixture. The lower the needle in the slide (higher clip position) the leaner the mixture.

Got it, what about that larger diameter sleeve that was in that kit? Do the stock needles have 5 positions or was the stock factory one a fixed needle?

Hate to bug you with this, but we are riding tomorrow and I only have tonight to work on this bike. Does the stock needle have 5 positions available, if yes then I need to pull the carb to see if it was a power up or stock and possibly change it. Also, in the kit it had a sleeve I am not sure what it was for? I have plenty of other maintenance to do on 4 bikes if I can save time not pulling that carb out just to read the stampings on the needle that would be helpful.

I don't have a stock version with me but I believe they have either four or five positions (at least the ones I have seen). However, it sounds like even if it is the Power UP needle that you need to adjust the clip position as well as change the pilot jet. The brass sleeve is the needle jet adn typically does not need to be installed replacing the stock one.

Thanks, I will pull it tonight and look closer I had the 115, 42, uni, baffled pipe, now it has the T4 so i will give it one last look then adjust. Its a fun bike for him to play on, any thoughts on the 225 EO kit or just get him a real bike once he gets a little better?
