    Hard to start when hot.

    by 737Captain » Sun Aug 14, 2005 1:40 am

We're new to this great world of four stroke dirt biking. Just bought three new CRF's; 100 - 150 - 230. The kick start bikes seem pretty tough to restart when they are warmed up. Especially the 150. I turned up the idle speed a touch, but otherwise they are totally stock. Probably de-baffle and rejet when the kids get a little more seat time. Any tips on starting these terrific bikes when we're out riding?

    Thanks,

    Ed

welcome 737 captain. a warm 4-stroke starts better on a lean mixture. therefore, don't use the choke, and make sure you aren't using any throttle as this will richen the mixture. also, a steady and firm kick works much better than a hard and fast kick.

lastly, a free flowing air filter and proper jetting will help with starting.

    good luck...ken

if your engine is cold then the choke helps a lot...if it's warm/hot then the choke will make it harder to start as it richens the mixture. it won't damage the bike by using the choke it just makes it harder to start if its already hot.

I dont understand why so many people are having trouble starting their 150's. When i start it i just turn on the gas, pump it a few times, turn on choke and it starts on the first or second kick everytime. When its hot it starts right away first kick no problem, sometimes i have to start full throttle though.
Also, im having no difficulty while my bike isnt even properly jetted, i have the snorkle out, and the baffle out and it still starts fine. I do have a 110 main coming my way.
What size pilot jet should i have? do i need a pilot jet if i get new main jet?

a 42 pilot should do the trick for you. The pilot jet gives you better off the line throttle response while the main jet controls more in the higher rpm's

OK MY WIFES CRF150 HAS ALLWAYS BEEN HARD TO START, TAKES FOR EVER TO WARM UP. THEN SEEMS A LITTLE BETTER WHEN WARM BUT SOMETIME SHE STILL HAS A HARD TIME. HAD PROBLEMS STK THEN DID THE POWER UP KIT, SNORKEL REMOVED, BIG GUN REV BOX, BIG GUN EXHAUST, UNI FILTER, 115MAIN, 38 PILOT AND NEEDLE IN 4TH CLIP FROM THE TOP. FEELS OK WHEN WARM NO BACKFIRE ON DECELL, BUT ALITTLE POP AT AN IDLE. FEELS SMOOTH ON ACCEL? BUT STILL HARD TO START, AND SHES BEEN RIDDING IT FOR TWO YEARS AND HAD A XR200 BEFORE THAT. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK, I'AM LOOKING AT A CRF230 WITH AN ELECTRIC START, SHE WANTS MORE POWER AND I JUST CANT GET ANY MORE OUT OF THE 150

Well its been a few days since my last post, and looks like no one else is interested in this post but me, so I have been trying to find the right combination on my own, its amazing that no one else is posting anything about the specs of jetting on this bike, not even the big exhaust manufatures. most of them say to use the stk settings, but I couldnt find what stk was? This is what seems to be working for me, main #108, pilot #38, stk needle in 3 position, air bleed 2-1/2 turns out from in, I think the air bleed was the biggest adjustment that made it easier to start. I tried the #40 pilot everyone talks about but the #38 seems to be the best at 2-1/2 turns out. its a girls bike and if its a little lean I think it will be ok, at least she can start it on her own. Hope this helps someone? Idle is smooth, no coughing, and I did install the stk pipe back on it.
