    Sizing handlebars for CRF150

    by CRF230dad » Wed Jul 27, 2005 11:28 pm

I bought some Pro Taper SE CR High handlebars for my 05' CRF230 & my son's 05' CRF150. I new I would have to cut the bars for my bike (0.5" each side), but it seems that my son's stock bars are smaller than mine and require more cutting. Both bars are bent so it's hard to hold the bars together to size the 150 bars or get an accurate measurement for cutiing. I have tried to find a schematic diagram for measurements but no luck. Does anyone know how much I need to trimso the cable have enough slack?
    Thanks!

    P.S. This forum is great!!

my recommendation would be to "mock" up the fit by putting the perches on the bars, loosely fitted, and mounted in the bar clamps. adjust their position and check cables for sufficient slack. when all looks well measure out from perches the grip width and mark it. remember it's easier to cut more off than add more back.

    good luck,

Ken, I totally agree. That's how we did Kathy's bars.

Also, the set we received had pre-marked cut lines on them at 0.5" spacing if I remember correctly.

Go easy on the amount you remove. We set ours up so that all cables are tight (no slack at all) at the left and right stops.

Well replacing bars not easy as it sounds...

I did the mock up and the bars looked really wide so I decided to cut 0.75 or 3/4". It would have all been fine and dandy but because the Pro Taper bars uses external supports for its crossbar unlike the integrated style of the stock bars, the perch for the master cylinder & brake don't go quite far enough to the left. Now the brake lever doesn't sit correct for a neutral hand position (too high) or to read the window for the brake fluid.

Option1 - Grid a bit near the bottom of the right clamp support for the crossbar so I can rotate the perch down more.
Con - May weaken the support not to mention jack up the new bars.

Option 2 - Trim the spacer between the brake perch & thorttle tube.
Con - May move lever too far out for good hand position.

    What do you think?

    CRF230Dad,

So we cut 1/2" off of Kathy's bars. I just measured, and she has 3/8" between the brake and start switch and 3/8" between the switch and the master cylinder.

Of course this is a 230 and not a 150, but with these quick measurements you should have enough space for everything on a 150 (although it should all be tight).

Another thing to consider is that we have cut the end off of her grips so that we could mount up bark busters. This free's up some space as you can run the edge of the newly cut grip right to the edge of the bar.

Anyway, post a picture if you need to. Good Luck!
