    sprockets....more teeth or less teeth??????

    by CRFpride* » Sun Mar 06, 2005 3:12 pm

i got a crf150f, i put this high compression race performance package for it, and i need a new sprocket for the "motor end" thats the best i can say it, anyhow, im guessin im gettin plenty of torque from this new kit, but i havnt tryed it yet, i dont know if more teeth is torqueyness, and less teeth are top speed,

so plz get that straight for me, and let me know what i should get, keeking in mind i have more torque/power to turn it, so i dont know,

i do plenty of trail riding, and on the bigger hills id stall it out, but thats before i put this kit in, and then id get on a back road and id have the bike just all out redlineing and its not realy goin all that fast, i love the speed, and i love the quick acucceleration,

so does anyone have this kit??, tell me about it, and what tooth count should i put on it,??, i dont wanna mess with the sprocket on the wheel, because its not wore at all, but the front ones junk, so i need some advice, tonight or 2morrow, plz help me out.

also, how much of a difference would one tooth size make for me???,

more teeth on the counter shaft sprocket, "motor end"= more top end speed, and less acceleration.
less teeth on the rear sprocket= more speed, and less acceleration.
As a general rule of thumb one tooth on the counter sprocket equals three teeth on the rear. When you change one sprocket your also supposed to change the chain and the other sprocket, or else the new sprocket/chain will wear quickly to match the the worn sprocket or chain. On these low horse power bikes i would doubt this being as big of a factor as it is on big bikes. If your only going to change the counter sprocket go up one tooth and keep playing with the ratio until you find what suits your riding style. Good luck

are you looking for more top-end speed or more low-end torque?

I can't speak for the 150F but we felt the stock gearing on the 230F was way to low for our style of riding. With a 6 speed gear box, both 1st and 2nd were stump pullers.

We dropped our back sprocket from the stock 50 to 48 teeth. The bike performs much better now. I would also agree with the advice to change sprockets and chains at the same time. However, if you have very little time on your existing setup, I wouldn't worry about it.

It is a trade off, You cant get both buttom and top end at the same time. If you get a larger rear sprocket you will make your bike accelerate faster out of the hole but will take away from the top speed.

If you make the front sprokcet smaller by one tooth, you will get the same resluts by making the rear sprocket larger by 3 teeth. But the front sprocket is a lot cheaper to buy than the rear.

So the buttom line is how do you ride. Do you need to get quick out of the hole or do you need to be faster in top speed but take a little more time to reach top speed.

Best of luck and keep the shiny side up.
