Tusk wiring harness and BajaDesigns headlight

by Old Dude » Sun Dec 02, 2012 11:36 am

I have a Tusk wiring harness and Baja Designs Headlight. Everything works but the headlight. It appears to be wired right but the 5 pin plug from wiring harness to Tusk switch only has 3 of the 5 pins hot (even with engine running as I am told hdlgt works only with engine running). When plugged in to the harness the switch is hot at the turn signals and horn but the headlight rocker switch (wht, blk and drk blue wires) has no power. What am I doing wrong? is the harness defective? ???? BTW anyone know what the extra 2 wires coming out of the back of the BD headlight are for? I assumed they were a running light but BD schematic doesnt address them. Do they maye tie in to a power source to run the H/L?

Thanks, spoke to Tusk tech this AM and inspite of the fact that the harness is designed to be run with their compact switch it does not power that switch to turn on the headlight. It merely controls Hi and Low beam function. He indicates it must be powered off the bikes power supply. Most guys I've read, run it off the battery thru a switch (holy crap another switch?) At this point I have
    (1) an ignition switch to start the bike,
    (2) an on/off switch to power the turn signals, brake
    lights, taillight and horn.
    (3) a switch to operate the turn signls, horn and
    hi/low headlight.
I would like to run the headlight off of the oem ignition switch. That make any since? and if so how would I go about it?

Does pulling power off of the Tusk on/off switch sound like a reasonable option. Then the headlight would be powered by that source. Start the bike hit the 'on' button and all lighting is available; hittting the kill button shuts the engine down but allows the headlight to operate till you hit the 'off' switch. BTW Trailtech stator is on the way.
