    Power question

    by dowda » Wed Aug 03, 2011 5:30 pm

Hey guys, I'm 52 and 175 pounds. I ride the 230 on trails and climb some hills with it. I usually climb in second gear. Some hills I need to slow down at the top and a few times it bogs down a bit. I have not gotten in trouble but was wondering if the hp upgrade is substantial for this type of riding. How much difference should I expect?
    Thanks David

hey. i do the same kind of riding but on a 450r. we climb some pretty bad hills. i was having trouble with hills that i had to slow down on and get back in it. so geared mine down, put the stage 1 hot cam in there for bottomend power so far i can tell a big differance but only got to ride a couple times since installing it. i orded a header and muffler for bottom end power that just come in but if i had it to do over i would have waited till i a rode a couple times cause i dont think i need it now and there very expensive as you know. im not a expert but hope this helps you.

Try knocking it back to first as you crown the hill.
It will crawl up a brick wall in first so you should have less worry about stalling.
It is also good if there is not to much "top of the hill" in case you need to stop quickly.

I am having the same problem when climbing up hills, when i am just riding around it seems to run fine, but when i try to climb a steep hill it dies. I build speed before the hill and down shift as i am going up the hill, had two more experienced riders try and they had the same problem. any suggestions?

This just doesn't seem right to me. We have a 2004 and a 2009 CRF230F and both are jetted per Mike Coe's dyno work. They are tractors with limitless torque and have climbed everything in our way. I don't think we've ever needed first gear and third does just fine most of the time unless it's just too fast.

As far as I can recall, my buddy stalled his 230 only one time on a nasty uphill because he missed a downshift. As far as bogging - Our 230s will take WOT from a walking pace in third (flat ground) without a hitch.

I suggest you double check the jetting and especially the float level.

    Good luck!

There is also the clutch if you are going to stall.
A quick in, rev, out as per a 2 stroke works as well.

I find travelling too fast at crown of hill, hence pull clutch. Some of the hills are only a bike wide at the top so not stopping for a look is not recommended.
