    Shifting Problem: 2006 CRF230F

    by GhostX » Sun Jul 25, 2010 8:23 am

I have been riding more on my CRF 230 lately, but during the last two trips have been experiencing shifting problems.

When shifting up from first to second gear, the shifter hangs up in neutral, and becomes very difficult to shift into second gear. The problem has gotten progressively worse over the last two trips, where yesterday at Rowher Flat I had to pack it in early. On two hill climbs it caused me great frustration, and I had to limp back to camp.

What does this sound like, normal clutch wear for a bike four years old?

Or, is this something more serious?

Is this something I could tackle myself with technical advice from the boards here, or better left to a professional?

    Not a clutch issue.

It's in the shifter mechanism itself. Either the shifter arm is bent, or a shift fork is worn.

    Thanks for the reply AS....

Solutions for a bent shifter arm or worn shift fork?

Shifter arm can be removed and inspected with the engine in the bike. If bent, replace.

Shift fork would require the engine being removed and the cases split.

Shifter arm is the preferred damage here...

Could be the gear shift cam and plate. Check for wear when you inspect the shift arm. 6 & 10 on schematic.
