I have an 05crf230, 132main, different needle, t-4 pipe, uni air filter and the snorkel removed. My buddys crf230 is all stock except a powercore 4 pipe. Mine had alot more bottom end but his kills mine from low mid to top then I SLOWLY begin to catch him.

I want abit more top end even thought I ride alot of trails and hills I would like abit more top end for the dirt roads. Should I play with the needle, feul screw or maybe a bigger pilot? What do you guys think?

Is the gearing the same? Are we talking a straight line drag race? does yours pull smoothly all the way thu the RPM range or go flat in the upper revs. A 45-48 pilot works very well with the opened intake and exhaust. Does yours backfire on decelleration?
O.D.

No mine doesnt backfire but it does sound like it might be loading up a little bit but never backfires. Yes it pulls smoothly and yes a straight line drag race and yes the gearing is the same.

zackn291,

By a different needle do you mean the C30F full power needle? What do you have installed?

What sort of height above sea level and temperature are we talking about?

After a full throttle run have you killed it and checked the plug colour?

I installed the power-up needle. It was a part number given to me by someone from the dr forum, I'm not sure what clip thought, I think it was the same position as stock. About 900ft above sea level and this was about 10 degrees celius but it was like this even last season and no i havent checked the plug colour.

Maybe he is just strait up better then you. ;)

there are a lot more factors in being faster in a drag race then who's bike has more power.

Traction is key. whats the tire situation and do you let it spin.

Body position.

Shifting ability. Either shifting too soon or too late can effect you.

In the End 1 or 2 horses aren't going to make you wonder boy. if your bike isn't running right then thats a problem. but I think just because your bikes power distribution is different then your friends bike doesn't mean yours isn't running right. When you slap on all that stuff(pipe, jetting, etc.) Thats what happens, it changes the power distribution and hopefully adds some :D .

There really isnt a problem at all I just want abit more top end.

I mean like riding to a trail on a dirtroad lining it up when were already in like 4th gear and then opening it up, he pulls away ALOT faster but I slowly begin to catch him.

I don't let the tire spin and my weight is always a little bit forward.

My shifting is good its not early and its not too late either.

Yea Its hard to ride holding something like that though.

How could I open up the top end abit more? Play with the needle position?

I don't know much about 230's but something that helped out with my 250x and 450R was just looking at what others are running at about the same altitude. this jetting database can help you with the 230 to see what others are doing: Jetting can make a big difference if you get things dialed in.

Are you positive the gearing is the same? I had a 12T front gear on my 08' crf230 and switched to a 14T (took about 20mins) and my bike does not even feel like the same bike. I am having to re-learn all my timing due to opening up the gears. I am in 4th now running fast on my normal trial where before I was in 5th. 1st used to be almost useless and now I can stay in it till I get up some speed now. The mod cost less than 20$ (see my mods) and really changed my top end, while still pulling smooth all the way through the power band. (just a suggestion.... good luck.

Sounds like an idea. What is your rear sprocket?
