    Bog/Hesitation/Splutter When Wide Open

    by Syxx » Tue Mar 17, 2009 4:56 pm

hey guys and girls, im new to the forum but not hondas, hailing from New Zealand i currently have a trx500fm7 and crf230f8 and am looking at getting a crf450r6 and just sold a crf230f6, my new crf seems to bog or cough and splutter when wide open, i have just got the bike and from the oil colour seems to have been just serviced, my 06 went hard and never acted this way at full throttle, ive tried to find the problem, changed spark plug, checked air filter, emtied tank and carb and reilled to no avail, please help.

Stock as far as im aware, just rode my boss' crf230f8 and i now realise how crappy mine is going, especially since my 06 ate his, but he thinks there may be condensation in the fuel even though i dumpd the tank, then later the carb, so ive got a capfull of meths in there, will update tomorrow with results.

does it pop when wide open?

    or sputter like its dying.

if its popping then its lean (air leak, wrong size jet, clogged main jet)

    sputtering then its too rich

the bowl is easy enough to take off, id check it out.

Its hard to explain, it feels like its hungover, like at points when riding and playing with the throttle i can feel a split second of its true power then it goes back to bein groggy and sort of coughs or splutters a bit high in the revs, losing a little power but not much, bowt as good a description i can give. undid the bowl on the carb alrdy but lost its contents due to clumsiness and ive also removed the entire bottom of it and found a small spec of dirt. afaik the bike is standard bar the exhaust baffle removed, but itacted the same way prior to removn it. :?

if you found dirt in the bowl, theres probably some clogging your main jet as well.

the easy way is to remove the bowl to get to the main and pilot jets.

but you CAN access the main jet by removing the bowl plug/nut thing on the bottom and putting a wrench in there.

take some fishing line, or piano wire or something similar and run it through the holes.

pulled bowl out, a substancial amount of crap in the bowl, took out the jets and blew them out, will muck around and have a fiddle later

how much crap was in the bowl?

at this point, depending on how much crap was in the bowl, you may need to dig deeper to clean more of it out. (removing slide/needle and cleaning EVERYTHING)

A reasonable amount, was thinking of pulling the needle out but looks tricky, just realised my airbox has no snorkle or cover (my 06 had a piece that slid in and covered some but not all of the intake vent) that would cause it to go like crap right? I made a piece to cover some of the intake from memory of my 06 and its much better but not quite right, its not spluttering now just a bit "muddy" sort of feeling, anyone have any good close up pics of the08 air box tract, or any better ideas?

well if blocking the intake helped then its probably too lean.

either A. your jetted too lean
    B. theres an air leak somewhere
    C. crap is clogging the jets to allow less flow

Quick question, does removing the baffle lean the motor out at all? i know removing the baffle AND intake does...
