    CRF 70 Wheel size

    by CALVIN » Mon Jun 02, 2008 8:43 pm

    Hi all,

I bought my daughter a 2004 CRF 70, nice bike and very clean. The rear tube valve stem tore around the base and I though it was just old rubber. A friend told me it might need a rim lock because the tire may have spun causing the stem base to tear. Can a 70 generate that much torque? Also, my local dealer said that 2003 & older CRF70's had 12" rear wheels and 2004+ had 14". He said that they don't stock the 12" tubes since they don't sell many. I am pretty sure that the bike is a 2004. Is he wrong or am I (do the newer 70's have 14" rear wheels?

    Thanks

    Calvin

Hey Calvin welcome to the site.

For starters, you are correct. The CRF 70 has a 12" rear wheel. However the front is a 14".

    Front Tire 2.50-14

    Rear Tire 3.00-12

The CRF's started in 2004, prior to that they were XR's.

I believe the 2003 XR 70 still had the same size wheels.

And no, they do not produce enough torque to spin a tire on the rim unless it was really underinflated.

    Thanks ~....

I did some more research and found that they did go to much larger wheels starting in 2005; 16 Rear, 19 Front. The seat height remained the same meaning they sacrificed a couple inches of shock travel. I guess the ride would be smoother, but not as stable???

This is a good forum for a newbie. Glad I found it.

Now that I read some of the odd spelling, it might be a foreign version??? I certainlty might be wrong, but the local dealer parts guy says that they do not stock 12" tubes anymore because Honda upsized the CRF 70's wheels.

Here is a site with fische on the 06 70. It even states a 12" rear you'll have to search it but is on there.

Because they are! They have no idea what they sell. My honest opinion.

    +1.

Last time I was in there, they tried to give me brake pads for a disc brake for a 2003 xr100! They insisted that the brakes were disc, until I walked about 15 feet over to the showroom area and asked them to show me the rotors, calipers etc...
