Hello,
I'm brand new here and have bought a '03 230 for my wife (first dirtbike for her)
We ride the Canadian Rocky Mountain Foothills, altitudes of 3700 to approx. 6000'.
The bike is bone stock (well, the previous owner stripped off the fork covers since he liked the 'metal' look better...now I've got a weep to deal with...but I guess that's a good excuse to address the oil level issue anyways).
I've been reading and reading, and must thank you all for doing MUCH of the research/trial and error work for me!
One thing I can't find much on yet, is info on mid to high altitude jetting info.
I've looked at the database and did a 'jet' search and spent most of this morning just reading.
What I've discovered is this:
From sea level to ~1000', using the stock exhaust and air filter (but having completed the airbox and exhaust pipe mods), most people are using a 42 main, and a 132 pilot. Mostly using the powerup needle too.
If using a hi-flow airfilter and an aftermarket exhaust, people are using a 45 or 48 main, with the 132 pilot, and again, using the powerup needle.
1000' to 2000', most people have a hi flow filter and an aftermarket exhaust. They run a 45 pilot and a 132-135 main. They run a mix of powerup and stock needles.
Above those altitudes, the info gets sketchy.
From 5000 to 9000', one guy uses a 42 pilot and went from a 115 main to a 102 main. Stock pipe but hi-flow filter.
From 3000 to 8000', one guy moved from a 42 pilot and 132 main with powerup needle, to a 45 pilot, 122 main with stock needle.
I already purchased the 132 main and have the powerup needle on order, but am wondering if the 132 is too much for my altitudes. Based on this rough data, I should be looking at something around 120ish for the main.
I'm not sure what pilot I have stock (I'm guessing it's the 42...but the 'easy to start, fast warm up and low end power help' promise of the 48 makes me wonder about the 45 or 48. We do ride at cooler temps than most of you N. Cali or N. Mexico guys do.....
Anyhow, I haven't started the mods yet (winter is here so unless I stud the wheels for ice...I can start to work but the riding tests will have to wait) but plan on the fuel screw from this site, as well as the cheap and easy pipe, airbox, sprocket mods. I'm just looking for advice to put me in the right ballpark so I can get the wife riding happily as soon as we can (can you believe it'll be June before the snow melts in the trees?).
Anyone with seat of the pants experience or thoughts on those figures? I'm not trying to beat a dead horse!
I guess while I wait for your thoughts, I'll spend the next few hours looking into the whole fork oil level issue. Your thoughts on that?
Thanks in advance. You have a really great forum here, and unlike forums I've seen before, I haven't seen any petty nastiness. Kudo's to your moderators and members.
