CRF230 POWER UP MODS QUESTION, AND YES, I SEARCHED...

    by massivemassey » Fri Oct 26, 2007 9:42 am

HE ALL, I'M NEW TO THE SITE AND HAVE BEEN RESEACHING ALOT OF THREADS ON HERE FOR THE PAST WEEKS/MONTH OR SO.
SO FAR I'VE GOT IT DOWN THAT THE POWER UP KIT MODS ARE
    FULL POWER NEEDLE FROM HONDA
    132 MAIN JET (HONDA)
    45 PILOT JET (HONDA)
REMOVE INTAKE SNORKEL, AND/OR REPLACE WITH HIGH FLOW FILTER
AND REMOVE EXHAUST BAFFLE AND/OR REPLACE WITH HIGH FLOW REPLACEMENT EXHAUST SYSTEM

MY ELEVATION IS APPROX 650FT ABOVE SEA LEVEL, BUT MOST LIKELY NO MORE THAN 1000. (IM IN THE DALLAS TX AREA) TEMPERATURE RANGES WHEN I RIDE ARE FROM 40-100 DEG., BUT USUALLY NO LESS THAN 50.
MY QUESTION IS ABOUT THE PILOT JET SIZE, I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE ON THIS SITE WITH NEARLY THE SAME ALTITUDE RUNNING A 42 PILOT JET, IS THIS THE STOCK PILOT JET??? REGARDLESS, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE 2 AND THE PRO'S/CON'S OF RUNNING ONE OR THE OTHER??? WHAT SIZE SHOULD I RUN???
BASICALLY I WANT TO MOD MY BIKE WITH A HIGH FLOW FILTER, REJET THE CARB WITH POWER UP KIT FROM HONDA AND THEN REMOVE BAFFLE FROM EXHAUST OR REPLACE WITH AFTERMARKET EXHAUST IF I FEEL THAT I WANT TO., I WANT TO DO ALL THIS AND BE ABLE TO TUNE THE BIKE TO IDLE/RUN PERFECT AND NOT HAVE TO MESS WITH IT AGAIN (SET IT AND FORGET IT) I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO KEEP TUNING AND SETTING THINGS DIFFERENT OTHER THAN THE WHEN I INITIALLY MOD THIS BIKE ,
    THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

use the 45, it will aid alot in starting.

    another combo to research is:
stock needle (from the 03-05's) on the 4th clip down from the top
    120 main
    45 pilot

alot have found the power-up needle/132 main combo to be too rich and losing power over the 120 main, stock needle option..

    just food for thought

SORRY , FORGOT TO MENTION IT IS AN 06' CRF230. DIDNT KNOW IF THAT WOULD MATTER OR NOT SINCE YOU MENTIONED STOCK NEEDLE FROM 03-05....

The stock needle in an 06 CRF230F should only have two slots, one is for high altitude and the clip will be on the slot for low altitude as is from the factory...

my elevation and temperature are around the same as yours (40f-105f degrees, and 300-1200 ft above sea level,) and my current setup works great with it.
    -airbox snorkle out
    -K&N hi flow air filter
    -#45 slow jet
    -#132 main jet
-stock fuel screw at about 1 3/4 turns out
-stock needle, needle jet, and needle clip is in stock position
    -White Bros R4 exhaust

my reccomendations to you for carb mods are the same, but for others i would say:
    -airbox snorkle out
    -White Bros powerfilter
    -spark arrester out of exhaust
i say these things remembering price...these are the cheapest things to go with the "power-up kit."

OH OK, SO BASICALLY FOR MY 06 I MIGHT WANT TO DO THE 132/45 COMBO AND LEAVE MY NEEDLE CLIP ALONE SINCE THERE IS ONLY 1 OTHER CLIP POSITION...

    IS THAT ABOUT RIGHT?

OK WELL I ORDERED THE 132 AND 120 WITH A 45 PILOT, SO THAT IF I NEED TO CHANGE THE MAIN, I WILL ALREADY HAVE IT. ALSO BOUGHT THE POWER UP NEEDLE AND WILL NOT INSTALL IT UNTIL I TEST HOW IT RUNS WITH THE 132/45 COMBO FIRST, THAT WAY I ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING THAT I MIGHT NEED AND CAN INSTALL IT IF I WANT.
    THANKS FOR THE TIPS.

UPDATE:: installed the 132/45 combo with power up needle, opened up air box, replaced filter with twin air filter, removed exhaust baffle and adjusted fuel screw. bike runs great after adjusting the fuel screw just right. warms up quicker and can pop the front end up alittle easier now.
the spark plug is clean but i need to take the bike out this weekend and really ride it and then check the plug again and see, from what i can tell the plug is clean, no lean looking deposits and definately not dark/burned looking. a few other guys i work with told me it looks really good so i guess i will find out how well after my first ride this coming weekend.
thanks to everyone for your help.

UPDATE 2: well , i went riding this weekend and didnt have any problems with the bike at all, I did, however notice that occasionally when gearing down, like on a steep descend down a hill in 1st gear, the exhaust would pop a little everynow and then, but i also found out this is normal with an opened up exhaust. so basically everthing is ship-shape.
All I need now is to adjust the fuel screw some more to get that paper bag spark plug color.
again, thanks to all for the help. Next up is probably stiffening the front forks.

    massivemassey :
It sounds like things are going along well for you, but you need to do as BBR and Rick Seiman of Project CRF230 in Off-Road.com, plus every CRF230rider on this site who has tried it will tell you to do :
Install a 15 tooth countershaft sprocket, JT makes them.
The 51 tooth you put on the back is a mistake. The bike doesn't need geared down, first is so low it is completely useless, and second is way too low. You're got a very jerky powerband now.
The 15T lets first and second actually work, and you lose nothing on the bottom. Try and climb a hill with your bike in first-fat chance, seconds not so hot either.
When you try it if you put it off you;l be kicking yourself. Seiman is a legend, and BBR , that speaks for itself. Do it.
the exhaust would pop a little everynow and then, but i also found out this is normal with an opened up exhaust
Actually it's not unless it's very little , it means you're still a little lean and your pilot needs opened a little.
Replacing both front and rear springs for your weight is a great idea. The front springs are a real joke on the 230's. Doug
