    Sprocket Size?

    by SnoPro » Thu Jul 26, 2007 7:29 pm

I just bought myself my first bike last week an '04 CRF230 with a Baja duel sport kit and found this forum and decide to join.
My first question is what is a good gearing setup for the 230. I have read the article on http://dirtbike.off-road.com/dirtbike/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=380752 and like they way they set theres up. The one thing I didn't understand is why didn't they just get a smaller rear sprocket instead of the larger front sprocket. To me it seems that this would be a better way to go because I wouldn't have the clearance issues they had and I would have a shorter lighter chain and sprocket.
My second question is what is a good chain and sprocket to buy? I was thinking sidewinder but only because that is why they used in that article.
Lastly are there any air filters out there that add some hp over the stock one. I am going to put in the power up kit and change the main jet remove the snorkel and exhaust baffle. So I am looking for a bit more cheep hp.

    Welcome to the forum.
I don’t know for certain but I can imagine that the engine finds it easier to turn a sprocket that is connected directly to the transmission than one at the end of a long chain.

I have a sidewinder setup, slightly different than the one you are referring to, 15/51 or 3.40 ratio. You are referring to a 15/50 = 3.33. The closest you can get to that by changing the rear sprocket is 13/43 = 3.31.

Sidewinder products are pricey. Personally I think you will be satisfied with a 14 tooth primary ($12-$15) and keep your stock chain and rear sprocket.
