250X baffle / diffuser and Jetting

    by Deanzo » Sun Jul 27, 2014 3:12 pm

    Hello all,

I'm new here, somewhat new to the world of dirt bikes.
Though I'm in my 40's and use forums for a range of other interests.

Last month I stepped up from a DRZ250 that I was using to lean on, to a 2012 250x with 25 hours on it.

Over all I'm very happy with it, though it does have the bog in the low rpm range.
After doing a lot of reading on the issue here and other sites.

Seems like re-jetting is a good first step.

To that end, I've ordered a JD Jetting kit from here which has just turned up :)

Opening up the air box is easy, and my friend is going to help with the install of the jetting kit.

The guy that had this bike before me, had removed the spark arrestor, and cut off the end ring that would hold it in place.
Though I have both parts and can fix that.

With all that said, what I need to know is...

1: On this bike/setup, when I read about the baffle or the diffuser has been removed, are they taking about the same thing ?
The "stuff" inside the spark arrestor.

2: With the jetting kit, I'm going to open up the air box, but with the pipe, best to leave all that stuff off/out.

I can live with the sound with out it installed, but if it doesn't need to be in the mid/high 90db range, then I wouldn't.
I also want to stick with the stock pipe for now, it will be some time (if ever) I could out ride the power it's got now.
But the bog is a right PITA for where and how I ride, so it must be fixed.

    Thanks

By removing the baffle the prior owner removed the spark arrestor-you should put it back in. Aside from that, a stock X muffler is not a tuned part without the internals so you will likely lose performance as-is. I played around with drilling through the baffle (I think it took a 16" long bit) once just for fun. No noticeable power difference for my effort but it was a bit louder.

For your bog, propper jetting is a must but the bike will benefit from an adjustable leak jet. Easiest fix is the PowerPump II.

    Thank you for the reply.

To repair the stock muffler has turned out to be a bigger pain than I had hoped (the way he cut it out)
I'm unhappy to leave it the way it is, and to top it off, aftermarket parts are a pain to get hold of down here.

So I've ordered an FMF 4.1 slip on from here.

    I'll now end up with,
    Air box cut out
Backfire screen taken out and changed to the no-toil kit
    JD Jetting kit
4.1 slip on with the 94db insert installed and stock header.

When I have all parts in hand and installed, I'll look into an adjustable leak jet if I'm still not 100% happy.

Nice - hope it runs well for you. You can also replace the leak jet if your carb has a removable (some Honda's do not - I do not recall the years/models). Only problem with replacing it with a different one is the total hassle of having to do it all over again (and maybe again and again) if you don't get it right.

If it does not have a removable, do some research as I seem to recall someone saying something about drilling it out??? ...Maybe not

The guy that was going to help/intall the jetting kit is busy till next Wednesday, so last night after reading up on the "how to" on a 450x on this site (both bikes are close in lay out.....close, but not the same) I gave it a go.

WOW, Mr Honda sure didn't make that easy.

I didn't list it above, but when I ordered the Jetting Kit, I also picked up a CRF's Only Fuel Screw, so I installed that at the same time.

It was 11:30pm when I got done, so to late to start her up and test. Will do that when I get home from work tonight.

Also looked over the "how to" check your valves.
That was easy next to getting at the carb!
Though both intakes are 0.003 :(
So thats another job on the list.

This site has alot of good info for anyone willing to give things a try :)

Proper testing tomorrow, but some feed back on a few items.

Today was all about getting the last bits installed, tomorrow is at the track/trail.

    JD Jetting Kit:
Comes with everything you need, parts, how to install and how to work out what ones you should use. I also wanted to check on a few things and my e-mails were replied to super fast(Thanks Dave)

Altitude: 20~ 100 (most of the time)
    Temp 40 ~ 80F
    Main jet size: 165
    Pilot Jet: 42
Needle use: Red - 5th Clip

    Service at CRF Only Store:
As an over seas buyer, super easy, takes PayPal, offers fast shipping (both orders have been under ten days for half way around the world!) Super fast replies via e-mail when needed (Thanks Ken)

CRF Only Fuel Screw: 1.75 turns out
Jetting Kit and FMF 4.1 was ordered here as well as other parts not listed, that were way cheaper in the US, that I'll need sooner or later.

    No Toil Super Flow Kit
    Awesome!
Really like this kit, the cage is a better fit, over the OEM Backfire screen IMO, and it is easier to line up the screw, which is it's self better.
Another with super fast and helpful replies to e-mails. I checked if I needed to change to the "Green" oil, from the "Red" (Green has no alcohol in it) but the Red is what they use, just leave it over night before you install it.

FMF 4.1 with 94db insert installed
Don't you just love it when everything lines up, I do!
And this did :) OEM Header to FMF Mid Pipe to FMF Muffler. Easy and took minutes.

    Other Items installed

    Unabiker Radiator Guards
You know how I said I like things that line up...
    Well these DONT!
The guards are great, but both sides took modding, the right side the most, they in no way take into account the fan mount on the radiator, so you have to cut a little bit out of the guard. Unless they packed the wrong guards into the right label packing, their fitting is way off.

    Trail Tech Vapor
Another item I'm happy with and works well, kit comes with almost everything you need, but...
If you hook up to your battery, which is an easy way to do it, you need an inline 0.5amp fuse, but it doesn't come with one.
At the parts store here, a holder cost $2 and the fuse was 10cents. For the price of the Vapor, and how cheap an inline fuse is, they really should have it in the kit.
Also,I ordered the Triple Clamp Protector for mounting, it come with a really bad tooling mark on the top facing side, that stands out when you walk up to my bike.
I ordered from their web site, and e-mailed to make sure stock on hand before I ordered, fast and helpful reply and again fast shipping.

    To finish off this thread.

Well tested now, and happy with how it's turned out.

I wouldn't go all over the top like some, that make out jeting or a slip on is like the 2nd coming.

I've gone from a bike I already was happy with, that had a few small issues that I didn't want to live with.
To one that meets my expectations.

    Popping on decel (Gone!)

When I pull hard on the throttle at low RPM, it no longer stops to have a wee think before it does anything.
This can feel like it all but stalls then comes back to life, or it builds up RPM/Speed much slower than it should.

Sound is way lower, and better all at the same time

I can roll off and roll back on in 3rd on more corners with out it having a total cow and almost stalling.

Thanks for the finishing off. It is always good to know that someone has had success or not.
Now get out there and enjoy.
