Thinking of making my 09 450x street legal, but have a couple of questions.
1 What gearing would you use? I like trail riding some techical parts, but don't want to many RPM's on the highway.
2 What is the best kit to use? What all has to be done to the bike?
Opps one more question, what about tires for street and still good for the trail ?

1. Unfortunately, this is a compromise situation...if you gear for technical parts you won't have the top end speed for the highway. You'll have to decide what compromise you can live with. Use our gearing calculator to check the trade offs before deciding. One the most useful tables is the one showing RPM and Speed for each gear.

2. There's no nationwide standard for what makes a bike street legal and it varies from state to state. Hopefully someone will jump in from Washington with details. The Baja Designs Dual Sport kit we offer is excellent and uses quality components. Some just piece one together to meet the requirements.

What part of the state are you from.. Here in Everett taskys metric is a inspector for dirt bike conversion, most of the shops are also, they should be to give you the list and walk you through the process

The Baja Designs kit will get the job done however there are some points I need to make. First the kit did not include a front brake tail light switch (required in Texas); I had to order that separately.
I park my bike in a garage & yet after a year I started having problems with the plastic BD is using. First I had problems where I mounted the tail light assembly to the rear fender. The plastic used in the BD tail light assembly will crack under stress. I had to repair mine by reinforcing it with aluminum bar stock and JB Weld.
I also had the power/light switch brake where the weather cover snaps to the switch. I emailed BD asking them if they have started using better parts and if they had replacements but I got no response.
I had to put a micro screw in the switch so I can operate it. When I do replace the switch it will not be a BD product.

Standard warranties are generally only a year long, I know this kit is outside that time frame. However I would definitely appreciate any assistance obtaining a new part.
I doubt BD will ship the subassembly part that is actually broken. Standard procedure in cases like this would be to replace the entire switch assembly.
The part that broke is the slide for the OFF/Park/High. Pictured above, The white plastic part that I drilled and inserted the screw into so I can still use the switch. The part of it that broke is the two clips that hold the thumb knob/weather cover.
Here is a photo of a complete assembly.


I am not looking to replace the taillight assembly; it will never be a problem now.

Replacement parts arrived today!
The swap out only took ten minutes and because the part was of the same design I used JB Weld to hopefully give it more strength. I also lubricated the action. Looks new and works great.
