    Got a problem

    by SoCal450R » Wed Jun 13, 2007 9:08 pm

Well I was installing my flatlands rad. guards today, and when i went to take off the left shroud the bolt that goes into the gas tank just free spun and i couldn't get it out, so I just worked around it with all but one bolt taken out. Ok my question is there a trick to getting that bolt out? or do i have to drill it out to get the shroud off?

no trick sounds like the bolt was tightened too much at one point and spun the "nut" in the tank you will need to gently remove and replace it some for of epoxy will be needed I am sure some one here has had this happen not I know you want to be care full what type of epoxy you use.

This is something I do when I absolutely have nothing else to do. Part of the problem is that the screw is over tightened and is very dry and sticks in there. Sometimes I take the screws out and clean them and lightly lube them up before putting them back in. It has worked so far.

I have not done that for a while but like you when I have too much time and no other projects I used to tape the head to a socket and wire wheel it to new condition If you do this remember to run a tap through the threads too then a pin drop of lock tight.

Yes, I've read here that people have been able to fix that up.

Also, when I remove the tank, I never remove the two bolts attaching the shroud to the tank. I just remove the lower two bolts and leave the shrouds attached to the tank. I rigged up a place to put the tank so there's no pressure on the shrouds. Sometimes, I just put it on the seat, which works fine.
