    Dunlop 952 Vs. 756

    by Smash » Thu Jan 18, 2007 11:47 pm

Ok, so the valve thread got me going. Wow a lot of you are running the 952. So I made the plunge at Chapparel tonight and bought the 120-90-18 952 and a new 80-100-21 756 front. I've always run a 756 rear. So what surprises am I in for?

same mileage as the 756. better upright hookup with possible chunking and knob base tears. all this experienced by two 952 in a row on Pat's 250.
some Motocross friends swear by this tire for moto.

    same mileage as the 756

Really? Well that's kind of a bummer,Dunlop's really pushing the extended knob life for the 952's.
I may have to try them anyway, because you California boys ride in so many rocks, generally a lot harder terrain period than us eastern types. Doug

Its an excellent tire. If you ride rocks as I do, you may have some chunking. It wears very even. The only tire I found that bites better is a M5B. They last about the same, but the bike is less sketchy on hard pack or asphalt with the Dunlop over the IRC.

The only real suprize is when riding over wet tree roots. It tends to be a little more slippery than the M5B. Considerably better than stock.

I did notice that I did not have to run a HD moose tube with this tire. I tend to run a little lower pressure than most and when on rocks, a pinch flat is a concern. Not with this tire.

That kind of terrain and rocks is where you guys have just GOT to try a trials tire sometime, any of the good ones like Mitas,Dunlop,Michelin,IRC etc.Just try one,the Dunlop can be had in the 60's right here, use a HD tube and about 12psi and get ready for a very pleasant surprise.
They outlast any knobby by a wide margin, too. Doug

I did not like the 952 front or rear. The front felt twitchy with it and the back chunked like crazy.
Life's tough, but it is even tougher when you're stupid.

I used the 952 for quite a while until it wore out in places like KM and the desert. It wore evenly, but did chunk a bit. Never had a flat either. Ran 14-15 lbs. It hooks up very well in all the terrain I ride in. I think you will like it. For me, it was a very predictable tire.. your mileage may vary.

I've seen some say they don't like the front 952. Never tried it.

The current 739AT is very nice in the hard stuff, but a little flakey on the track.

Tire's are Definitely a personal choice!!! I've been running a 952 front since late summer and love it!! Its just as predictable to me as a 756 but no flat's and seems to be wearing pretty well!!!!! I can't speak for the 952 rear... Havn't ran one yet...

    Heres a few pics....

Thanks for that Dev. I know how you ride so I will not make that comment any more. I really liked the 952 rear, and now I think I may have to try the front! :)

I really like my 952's I have front and rear and both seem to be wearing well. I put the 952 front on first and it was a huge improvement over stock maybe that is why I like it so much. the front currently has about 1000 miles on it and it is going to be time for replacement soon, but overall it holds up well. As for the rear I now have 250 miles on it and it is not wearing anything like a 756 I went through 2 of those in 1300 miles. I am not sure if it is the width of the tire but it feels more stable at higher speeds it also grips much better in turns is my feeling. I will probably keep putting this tire on till they decise to discontinue it.

Now this all could be becuase I run my tires till there is almost no knob left so the new taller knob could be just a feeling of a new tire. But I will know more after this weekend.

I like mine have them on front and rear,But I mostly ride on tracks so I'm a thinkin' the chunks are a comin'from the rocks.

If I rode track 100%, I'd stay on the 756, but since I ride a fair amount of each, this tire has worked well for me. I do run a lower psi in the rear ~11-12 and the hook-up is sweeeeet.

Tire's are Definitely a personal choice!!!
They sure must be. I've read a couple GNCC and WORCS bikes articles where detailing the set-up the rider wants (and these were some real good riders )the front tire selected was the 742,and not the new 742AT or whatever it is like came on my R either.
The first time I rode my X I didn't have any problem at all with the 742, but the terrain that day weekend was just perfect.
Then I read on this site what a lousy tire it was,I yanked it and put on a 756,and the 742 is still hanging in the garage. Doug

Thats funny, My 742 is still hanging up in the garage with only a few hundred miles on it... It definitely worked better pumped up to around 17-18 psi
