450X engine in 450R frame, plated dual sport

    by chopper » Sat Jun 05, 2010 7:03 pm

I recently finished my new dual sport 450X.I used the engine from my 06X and mounted it in an 08 450R chassis. I used the larger radiators from the X and also an 08 X tank and shrouds. All other plastic, seat, and subframe are R componets.

    1. Winters are long and boring in Ohio and projects like this help the time pass.
2.The bike is now an 08 instead of an 06 and fools me into thinking that I have a newer bike.
    3.I like unique bikes.
4.Wanted to experiment with possible weight savings.
5.No more fighting to fit the air filter in through the too small side door!!!!!
    6.To make people ask why.

Yes the motor bolts in with no mods. You do need to get the upper engine mounts for the frame that you are using due to the fact that the engine is mounted at a different angle in the R frame than it is in the X frame. The toughest problem to overcome is fabricating a mount for the battery.

you seem to know alot about mixing and matching, so will an 03 r motor bolt into an 07 frame if you use the mount brackets for the 07?

The older engines are narrower through the cases at the front motor mounts. What you would need to do is use the existing motor mounts on the newer frame as they are welded to the frame and since the motor is narrower you will need spacers between the engine cases and the frame mounts. I know that this is possible as I have a riding friend that has built one with this combination.

Thank you Bucker 066. Yes an electric start R for MX would probably appeal to more riders than something like what I've done. I'm thinking in Cali one wouldn't want to use an R frame for off road as you would lose the green sticker. The R subframe and entire rear half conversion to the R pieces on an X model may be worthwhile for an off road Cali rider.

You are correct, it is an X skid plate. I made a bracket that bolts under the Y in the downtube so that the skid plate could be mounted as it was on the X frame. I did that so the coolant overflow bottle from the x could fit between the frame tubes of the cradle. The difference between X and the R frames is difficult to determine from a picture but the boss case into the Y of the X frame is one way of telling. In the case of mine you can't tell because of the skid plate. Another way is the angle of the mount that the fuel valve(petcock) bolts to, it is angled greater on the R frame.
