So if I were to replace the top end, I am basically only replacing the following?

piston
piston rings
piston pin
circlip

cylinder gasket
cylinder head gasket

Assuming the above is correct, if I were to buy a cometic top end gasket kit, I am just getting the cylinder and head gasket?

I plan to replace the piston in my 04 w/ the OEM 08 CRF250R piston, but am unsure if I can use the cylinder & head gasket from the 08 top end kit???

If not, I can buy the 08 CRF250R piston kit and get the 04 cometic top end gasket kit, and that would be a complete top end, right?

thanks in advance,
Dave

Add a timing chain to the mix. You'll need a left side crankcase cover gasket. Need to remove the flywheel, it requires a special puller. Motion Pro makes a good one or you can try to rent one. I'm sure Paul can help you locate one if your head is at his shop anyway...

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think any special gaskets are necessary when just swapping pistons. Shouldn't be. Cometic doesn't make a top-end kit for 04 250X. Moose makes a kit 04-08. Decent stuff.

I purchased an OEM gasket kit a while back for my 07, fairly cheap. The kit came with the head and base gasket, the exhaust crush gasket that sits in the head, and the rubber valve cover gasket.

Pretty much everything that you would need to rebuild the top end of the bike.

As 124 said, it would be wise to replace the cam chain. Very simple job, hardest part is pulling the flywheel, and then torquing it back to spec. I picked up a Tusk puller from Rocky Mountain, and it worked great, and was a lot cheaper then other brands.
