    Great Software for Garmin

    by JDGreen » Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:37 am

I found the best software to make your own actual maps (not just tracks) is called Mapwel
You can download it at www.mapwel.com

I hate buying software but for $45 this is fantastic.

    Welcome to the site JD.

It always raises my suspicion when somebody's first post is to pimp a product.

It also raises my suspicion when there are 5 or 6 other people who have posted from the same IP with only 1 or 2 posts.

It also raises my suspicion when the site that we are directed to is in the former Soviet Bloc...the home of hackers and internet thieves.

    Caveat Emptor.

For further news....that site is BLOCKED on our computer system here at work......hmmmmmm
We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?

Ohyyyy ... got me worrying AS! Hopefully my identity doesn't vaporize and I wake up in a Soviet Gulag ... or worse!

I feel naive that I didn't get the apparently obvious warning signs.

actually found a couple of references to Mapwell in KTMTalk from someone that didn't seem to be pimping and had 300+ posts. Not saying it wasn't being spammed by this guy though!

but the process is very time consuming and will not happen without specialized (and very expensive) software.

Not quite true anymore. With Mapwel you can convert and load a map into a Garmin for way under $100 and under 30 minutes. http://www.mapwel.eu/

That is pretty cool...I am going to try it out tonight.

Have you messed around with it much? I am curious how the reference process is presented...have you messed with the "Map Georeferencing" portion of this product? Without flexibility in polynomial alculations...the end result is going to be far from accurate unless you are working with quads or below.

It is worth $45 to play around with, however...

Actually no. I calibrated a few and converted a TOPO just to see how it was done but I use the program mainly to make trail base maps. I know they've made several improvements since I tried it and it was easy then. I do all my editing with Expert GPS then Mapwel becomes my last step to convert to .img and send to the unit. Absolutely worth the $45.

I'm finding most of them are PC only and I have a Mac  I will definitely check it out Ken, thanks.

    Roady,
Depending on your Mac, it can be easy to dual boot it to XP. It can be nice to have as you don't loose as much compatability, like you are experiencing now. Just a friendly suggestion.

Sounds like a great suggestion ... I have my work laptop always at home (which is a PC), but I avoid personal use with it as much as possible. I will ask my IT guy about this (my 22 year old son :D ).

    Thanks

(edit - just occured to me this image of a rebel without a cause is slowly emerging ehh ... KTM 300 2s, Mac, ugly beemer -Z3 Coupe- with limited production numbers )

Most of us have just chalked it up as "Roady's having a mid-life crisis"...You'll come back to the fold soon enough...a 450X 4s, a PC and you'll be driving a Camry.
