What is your Pre-Race meal of choice?

    by braap207 » Sun Dec 23, 2007 12:21 am

Thought it would be interesting to see what everyone eats the day prior and the day of the race.

I myself pre-load with carbs the night before with a meal that has to include Pasta, green vegis and lots of fruit. I also drink enough water to make myself pee in the middle of the night  Which is good but if your driving from 3am to make it to the race it requires a larger bladder I've learned... The morning of the race I start with (depending on the time we have to leave for the race and how awake I am :o ) Milk, Oatmeal and a protien shake. Then as a tradition when we are all awake in the truck we'll find a gas station that sells that delicious breakfast pizza with eggs, sausage and all the good stuff. I'll top that off with some gatorade and another protien shake before the first moto :x Throughout the day I will eat light depending on the breaks in motos and eat whenever I can to keep the energy up. Yes I will have a Monster energy drink  Tweaks me out just enough to make it through the 4th or 6th motos! So does everyone else eat?

I eat whatever I feel like eating. Most of the time its cereal and some milk. During the race day I eat lightly but since I only do about 4 motos a day I might have a hamburger after I'm done racing or in between if I have a long break.
One of the main tracks I race at has the best, worst for you, hamburgers I've ever had. I love those..

Pasta or equivalent carb builder the day before. Something light in the morning. Usually makes me completely starving after the first moto, then I eat something I shouldn't (like hotdogs or something bad). usually pull 2nd moto holeshot. And then I end up wishing I hadn't ate that third hotdog about halfway through the 2nd moto. Wishing I had a beer at that point as I fade to third/forth...

That is my usual race routine...

A six pack of Bud-Lite before each moto and a smoke on the starting line.

I raced D37all of 2003 finished #1 novice and 15 overall here is my race day routine.
I woke up at 4AM bike already loaded
Stopped for gas and picked up two moon pies.
Drove across the strewet from gas station and went through the jack in the box drive through.
I would order the same thing every race day 2 tacos and a large coke eat it on the road. aprox 2hour drive.
I would sign in and race and drive home right after 1/2 way home if I felt tired I would pull over and take a 20 or 30 minute power nap.
    Thats what worked for me.
I lost 30 lbs that year Its baaa ack.

Well, Most athletes are comfortable eating their pre-race meal about 2–4 hours prior to a race, but experiment during training with the timing and quantity of carb intake in order to find the approach that works best for you. Like bananas, oatmeal is almost pure carbohydrate. It is also the most filling food among the five best pre-race foods.

A bagel makes for an excellent pre-race breakfast food not only because it’s rich in carbohydrate, bland, and easily digested, but also because it’s something many runners eat for breakfast routinely, hence familiar.
